Your Friday night and mine… differ

Lance | Photography | Sunday, January 31st, 2010

The casual banter about meeting for beers after work on Friday. Often the play by play overheard of a gathering of cogs than went well into the night. Okay, I live in a different world I doubt anybody knows or understands. There’s a certain grim satisfaction that goes with the knowledge, a slight mischievous grin always lingering under the surface of a face that betrays little.

My Friday evening was spent unwinding over another piece of a creative puzzle. It’s going somewhere, taking on a life of it’s own. I hope I can keep up.

Thank you Olivia for being another willing canvas.

Remember when song lyrics defined your life?

Lance | Photography | Sunday, January 31st, 2010

Having just finished “The Gathering Storm” I think this song would be apropos for Rand. But not just him…

So much that I’ve done wrong it’s an open book
I’ve done much more than my fair share of damage

What once was hidden now is crystal clear. Transformation is within me
To break the cycle I must turn to you
What I lack I gain through your virtue I gain through you

Even when I fall will you still believe. Even when I’m lost will you still believe

Shattered by the hate that I carry
Take me as I am and make me whole again
I am lost without a purpose always consumed by self
I freely give this calloused heart can you forgive me

Even when I fall will you still believe
Even when I’m lost will you still believe
Now I don’t have much, will you save me
But I’ll give it all, will you save me

I’ve made so many mistakes
And I’ve broken so many promises
I’ve searched inside and I’m empty
Will you save me Will you save me

Even when I fall will you still believe
Even when I’m lost will you still believe
Every time I fall will you save me
Even when I fall will you save me

Being a Photographer: How I make it work

Lance | Photography | Thursday, January 14th, 2010

The Wall Street Journal released their “Best and Worst Jobs 2010″ list.

Photographers take note – your job sucks.

As Photo District News notes, out of 200 jobs “Where did “photographer” rank? 126, right between “waiter/waitress” and “ad salesperson.” “Photojournalist” ranked at 189, just out of the bottom ten, between “firefighter” and “butcher.”"

I think any Photographer who has been in Bend, Oregon longer than five minutes has found out much to their dismay (or delight if you’re a real masochist), these rankings are probably far too optimistic. If that is a national ranking, Bend hits the bottom of the old toilet bowl at breakneak speed through a sheer glut of photogs. Don’t believe it? Take this proven test: step out your door wherever you are and throw a stone in any direction. When you hear the surprised yelp that follows you will have hit a photographer. Now if you smacked the camera out of their hands, don’t blame ME – I didn’t tell you to throw it HARD after all.

But as a photographer I count myself fortunate for the following reasons:

I have never even remotely been interested in the very respectable job of photojournalist – Rank 189.

I have never been interested in hanging a shingle above the door that says “I am photographer – hear me roar” – Rank 126.

I am absolutely fascinated, moved and eternally motivated by Photography as my art and expression – Rank 104.

“104″ is still a ways out though. Good thing I get to rely on good old Number 15 (web developer) to keep the lights on and the gear coming.

It’s not always about doing JUST what you love – it’s sometimes about being smart enough to do the necessary things that allow you to do what you love.

Snow. Yay. But wait…

Lance | Photography | Sunday, January 3rd, 2010

Snow is troublesome. The potential for blown photos is great. And it’s cold. Wet. Does funny things to veins and skin. Hides far too many abominable snowman and polar bears. Has random spots of yellow that would have real potential for interest if only they were bigger. Imagine what a Brachiosaurus might have left. Fascinating.

Sierra had it down. Right looks, right attitude. Amazing resistance to goose pimples. Not a bad way to start the new 2010 year!
